IN SUPPLY CHAIN

Redesigning enterprise tools involved in transportation system in the overall supply chain management process to incorporate evolved technologies and practices.

ABOUT

An American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets, department stores, and grocery stores from the United States. It operates with more than 11000 retail units in 24 countries and eCommerce websites, and approximately 2.5 million associates around the world, 1.5 million in the U.S. alone.

Understanding System TOUCHPOINTS

The various touchpoints involved in the transportation system are broadly classified into 3 categories: Locations, Warehouse & Transport.

An interactive platform has been built to educate a user to get a clearer understanding of the system about what the touchpoints are, and how they interact with each other.

CURRENT STATE
of the Transportation System

The existing transportation system is in dire need of redesign as it is outdated and in efficient as per the current needs of the stakeholders involved. Since then, the capabilties of the technologies involved in the system have become drastically better, but the current system isn’t capable of utilizing it to its full potential.

From the increased scale of operations over the years to the delivery vehicles getting significantly better. From the changes in the trends & behavior of the end-consumers to the advancement of software capabilities to automate and optimize the process to minimize the users’ involvement. The existing system also suffers from the lack of intuitiveness and poor quality of usability as design wasn’t as prominent of a practice as it is today.

OBJECTIVE

Redesign enterprise tools involved in the transportation system to make them user-friendly, increase efficiency of task completion, improve integration between the different modules and also the stakeholders, and make the overall supply chain management process more versatile.

SCOPE
of the Enterprise Tool

Since the system involves various stakeholders and touchpoints, the scope of the tool is vast, including service-level interventions and achieving automation.

MASTER DATABASE

Manage master database related to the internal system touchpoints

PACKAGES

Increase efficiency of package creation and loading/unloading operations.

ORDERS

Fulfill order requirements of related stakeholders (regional centers, stores, etc.)

CONFIGURATIONS

Provide easy presets & configurable settings (role-specific control) for quicker task completion.

OPERATIONS

Optimize operations of drivers, based on hours of service, distance, fuel and route restrictions.

VISUALIZATION

Provide quick visually comprehendible information (A lot of data is to be analyzed).

UX DESIGN INTERVENTIONS

Provide an end-to-end experience for the enterprise stakeholders from getting a Purchase Order based on the demand to delivering the commodities in an efficient manner.

UX 2a.png

Incorporating the specific needs of the various stakeholders in the system comprising of warehouse workers, store managers, regional managers, operations manager, drivers, load/unload staff, etc.

Process Purchase Orders in a manner where multiple instances are consolidated in order to make their fulfilment efficient in terms of time, man-power, fuel and other such crucial factors.

UX 4.png

Create routing plans with specific configurations for specific scenarios, to improve the efficiency and decision-making of the system, and minimizing the involvement of the user.

Consider edge-case and critical scenarios like adding overrides to the current specifications or catering to events like thanks-giving or natural disasters.

Combine the functionalities of the different modules for a cohesive experience through a singular platform.

UX 5.png

Allowing the user to track and intervene a planned consignment at any stage in its lifecycle. Despite automatic optimized consignments, user gets manual control to perform certain actions.

Additional features like simple & advanced search options, distance & delivery time estimation tools and profile configurations are also incorporated.

UI DESIGN INTERVENTIONS

UI-MDM1.png
Label-MDM1.png

<hover to view details>

Provide a common user-friendly database preview for touchpoints like locations, agencies, drivers, trailers, trucks, etc., with the flexibility of adding, searching, viewing and editing the entries.

UI-MDM2.png

In the details page of an entry, using appropriate visual means to portray the data to the user, for eg. actual map view for geographic location, graphical representation of the working schedules, illustrations for trailer and truck types, etc.

UI-Plans 1.png

Showing auto-created plans for the trips by the optimizer, and allowing the user flexibility to make changes, perform assignations and provide approvals manually as well.

UI-Plans 2.png

Allowing user to add or change certain preferences (basically adding overrides to the existing settings) to allow the optimizer to work more efficiently and cater to certain temporary use-case scenarios.

UI-Trip 1.png

Giving the user a preview and allow them to track the trip right from the planning stage upto the completion stage. While the trip is in transit, giving real-time updates with visual indications for quick comprehension.

UI-Trip 2.png
